Leona Ruth “Ruthie” Buchanan, of Eureka, died at Greenwood County Hospital, in Eureka, on February 12, 2009, at the age of 95.
She was born on December 21, 1913, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Charles Anderson and Anna Belle (Smith) Scott. She was raised in the Eureka area, and graduated from Tonovay High School. After graduation, Ruthie attended Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia, and received Normal Training. After her training she taught school for a short time in Emporia.
Upon returning to Eureka she was a homemaker until the late 1960’s, when she began working in the area nursing homes. Ruthie then returned to school and graduated as a Registered Nurse. She retired from the medical field in 1987.
She is survived by three sons, Albert Jones of Shawnee; Jerry Bane of Wichita Falls, Texas; and Bill Bane of Eureka; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Linda Sue Bane and Judy Lawrence, three brothers; and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, February 16, 2009 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka, with Mr. Jayme A. Koup officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Greenwood County Preservation Society. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
