LaVon Smith
LaVon Maxine Smith of Toronto, died on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the Eureka Nursing Center, in Eureka, at the age of 83.
She was born on November 26, 1928, in Yates Center, the daughter of Leo Alford and Mildred Alice (Stone) Harris. She was raised in Borger, Texas and Toronto. The family ran a grocery store in Toronto for many years and the entire family helped to operate it. LaVon graduated from Toronto High School. She was Valedictorian and First Chair Trumpet in the High School Band. She was very active in music since the 6th grade.
After graduation she moved to Wichita to attend Wichita Business College. She graduated in 1948. On September 5, 1948, LaVon was united in marriage to Del Smith in Toronto. They made their home in Iola. They moved to Wichita in 1950, where LaVon worked for the IRS among others. In 1963, they returned to Toronto to live on the farm. After Del retired, they enjoyed traveling and camping. LaVon was very active in the community and church.
She was a member of the Toronto United Methodist Church, Lucky 13 Extension Homemakers Unit, the Toronto American Legion Auxiliary Post #325, and the United Methodist Women. LaVon was Historian for the extension unit, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, and treasurer for the church.
She is survived by her husband, Del of the home; two sons, Thomas and wife, Lisa Smith of McKinney, Texas; and James and wife, Susie Smith of Derby; five grandchildren: Kelli, Staci, Levi, Thaddeus, and Caleb; and two sisters, Evelyn Baker of Toronto; and Nancy Scarborough of Winchester, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the Toronto United Methodist Church with Reverend Jim Uhlig of Yates Center officiating. Interment will follow at Toronto Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Center for Dementia Research. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
