John Edgar “BooBoo” Scates, formerly of Eureka, died on Thursday, January 1, 2015, at Newton Medical Center, in Newton, at the age of 58.

He was born on October 23, 1956, in Eureka, the son of Lee Franklin and Carolyn Sue (O’Neal) Scates. He was raised in Eureka and graduated from Eureka High School with the Class of 1974. After his schooling, he began working in the oilfields around Eureka. Later he moved to Bakersfield, California doing roustabout work. While in California, he learned to operate a crane and began doing oil and road crane work. He traveled all over the United States and eventually returned to Eureka.

He is survived by three brothers, Randy and wife, Marcy Scates of Galveston, Texas; Carl and wife, Terry Scates of Newton; and Loren and wife, Sarah Campbell of Haysville; six nephews and nieces, Nikie Walker, Racheal Pate, Zachary Lindsey, Kodi Scates, Katelyn Scates, and Lynna Scates; and five great-nephews and nieces, Garrett Scates, Chance Pate, Bentley Huston, Kylie Pate, and Breken Huston. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka with Pastor Warren Olson of the Hamilton United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Upper Fall River Cemetery. Visitation hours are set from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Monday, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Matt Samuels Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
