John Arron (Doc) Cookson, 54, a longtime resident of Hamilton died Monday, March 24, 2003 at his home in Hamilton.
“Doc” Cookson, the son of Anna Mae Alvord (Cookson) Barb and James William Cookson was born October 23, 1948 in Emporia, Kansas. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1966.
“Doc” entered the United States Army on May 6th 1968. He completed his basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Before shipping out to Viet Nam he was stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia. He served in the Special Forces in Viet Nam. He received the Viet Nam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Expert Qualified Badge M-14 and M-16, Parachute Badge, Combat Infantryman Medal, and achieved the rank of Sergeant. He was honorably discharged on May 5, 1971.
After serving his country “Doc” returned to Hamilton. He married Debbie Smith in July 1973, they were later divorced.
“Doc” was a well-known self-employed welder in the area. Later he became a welding instructor at Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station.
His survivors include his mother Anna Mae (Cookson) Barb of Madison, two daughters;
Melanie Cookson of Augusta, and Samantha Cookson of Kansas City, one granddaughter; Alexis of Augusta, three sisters; Rosella Boone of Dennis, Kathy Deacon of Augusta, and Doris Roach of Emporia and three brothers; Truman of Alva, Oklahoma, Dan of Madison and Richard (Dick) of Toronto.
His father James William Cookson and a brother James William Jr. preceded him in death.
The funeral conducted by Pastor Alan Hunter will be held at Koup Family Funeral Home 121 N. Oak, Eureka, Kansas, and Friday March 28th at 2:00P.M. Graveside burial will be at Janesville Cemetery in Hamilton.
