John Charles Cook, Sr. formerly of Eureka, died on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at Golden Living Center in Spring Hill, at the age of 90.
He was born on July 13, 1921, in Caney, the son of Andrew Jackson Scott, Sr. and Stella Mae (Mitchell) Cook. He was raised in Eureka and attended local schools. After his schooling, he worked at a grain elevator, and as a brick layer. On December 26, 1941, John was united in marriage to Fern M. Rice. They made their home in Eureka.
He joined the United States Army in 1942 serving in central Europe including the Rhineland and Normandy campaigns where he earned a Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged in 1945. After his discharge, the family ranched in Montana for several years before returning to Eureka. In the late 1950’s they opened Cook’s Aluma-Fab in Eureka. John retired around 1998. He and Fern celebrated their 69th anniversary in 2010.
John was a member of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church, the Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, the City Planning Commission, and a supporter of 4-H. He was also an ordained minister. He served as a deacon, and superintendent of Sunday school services at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Fern of the home; daughter, Lynda and husband, Gerald Barrick of San Francisco, California; son, John C. Jr. and wife, Linda Cook of Mesquite, Texas; son, Joseph and wife, LeeAnna Cook of Manteca, California; daughter, Laura Stewart of Gardner; son, Justin Cook of Eureka; daughter, Lorayne and husband, Nelson Rivera of Junction City; and daughter, Lynelle and husband, Olin Ladd of Topeka; eighteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one brother, James Cook of Burlington; and one sister, Ollie Slead of Eureka. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Andrew Jackson Scott Cook, Jr; sister, Opal Loveland; and sister, Edna Cook.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, October 24, 2011, at the Jefferson Street Baptist Church, in Eureka with Director of Missions Marty McCord of the Southeast Kansas Baptist Association officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jefferson Street Baptist Church Hunger Fund. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
