Joe Foster Boyer of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, formerly of Eureka, died on Thursday, August 12, 2010.
He was born on November 2, 1925, in LaHarpe, the son of Russell and Lucille (Foster) Boyer. He was raised in Iola and attended local schools. During World War II, Joe served in the United States Navy, as an encrypted code machine technician. Serving from 1943 to 1946, he was assigned to the U.S.S. Briareus and the U.S.S. Prometheus. He saw action in the South Pacific near the Solomon Islands.
On January 4, 1948, Joe was united in marriage to Helen Stewart in Iola, Kansas. They made their home in Eureka. Joe worked for Kansas Farm Bureau Insurance until his retirement in 1988. He also worked a little in the oil business.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of the home; one daughter, Joelen “Jody” and husband, Rick Fortier of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania; son, David Boyer of Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, Jonathan and wife, Lisa Fortier; Kathryn and husband, Matt Helfrich; and Ryan and wife, Ashley Fortier; one great-granddaughter, Marlee Aday Fortier; and two brothers, Marvin and wife, Ruth Boyer of Iola; and Harlan Boyer of Iola. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Eureka. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation hours are from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Monday, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church or to T.R.Y. (Together for Retarded Youth). Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
