Jean Isabel Ensign, of Eureka, died on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, at the age of 82.

She was born on January 17, 1927, in Wichita, the daughter of David O. and Beulah (Monroe) Kiser. She was raised in Wichita and graduated from the Wichita school system in 1944. She then attended Wichita State University and graduated with the class of 1949, with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology.

On May 28, 1949, Jean was united in marriage to Robert Ensign in Wichita. Over the early years of their marriage the family lived in Chase, Peabody, Marysville and Wiesbaden, Germany. In 1962, the family moved to Concordia, where Jean was the secretary for the United Methodist Church of Concordia. She also worked as a medical transcriptionist, but spent most of her time as a homemaker. In 2007, Jean and Robert moved to Eureka.

She is survived by her husband, Robert of the home, two sons, David Ensign of Louisville, Kentucky, and Steven Ensign of Eureka, one daughter, Jane Laible of Topeka, nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, February 2, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church of Concordia with Pastor Sandra Moore officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045, which was in charge of funeral arrangements.
