Janet Marie Valentine of Eureka, died on Thursday, September 1, 2022, surrounded by her family, at Ascension Via Christi St Francis Hospital, in Wichita, at the age of 63.
She was born on August 21, 1959, in Axtell, Kansas, the daughter of Willis and Elizabeth (Rethman) Walters. She was raised in Corning and graduated from Centralia High School with the Class of 1977. She then went on to Emporia State University on a basketball and softball scholarship. She spent two years at Emporia and played sports both years.
On May 30, 1981, Janet was united in marriage to Mark Valentine in Eureka. They made their home in Eureka. To this union, four children were born. Janet had a passion for sports, and she coached all her children each year. She will be remembered also for her green thumb and her thriving tomato plants. She loved gardening and could save or bring back any plant, no matter how weak it was.
Janet worked for UPS each year for the holidays and managed her and Mark’s rental properties. She and Mark spent every weekend in the stands somewhere to watch their grandchildren play whatever they were doing. They never missed any event or performance, and Janet was always the loudest person in the grandstands. She will be remembered for her love of Christmastime, it was her favorite holiday, and she shopped all year long for it.
She is survived by her husband, Mark of the home; four children, Lucas and wife, Amber Valentine of Eureka; Sunny and husband, Derek Griswold of Emporia; Jana and husband, James Barnaby of El Dorado; and Zoee Valentine and fiancé, Brandon Winfrey of El Dorado; twelve grandchildren: Tristan, Gabe, Kyler, Laken, Olivia, and Brynsley; Reese, Trinden, Miles, and Oaklee, and Blair and Larkyn; and eight siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, September 8, 2022, at Koup Family Funeral Home, Eureka. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka. Visitation hours are set from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
