Jane Eleanor Dennis

Jane Eleanor Dennis, of Eureka, died at the Greenwood County Hospital on Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at the age of 94.
She was born in Frankford, Kansas on May 12, 1913, the daughter of Dr. C. A. and Beulah (Kinzer) Shumway. She was raised in Baldwin and Fredonia, and graduated from Fredonia High School with the class of 1931. She then attended Baker University in Baldwin, and later attended the Sisters of Mercy Nursing School in Independence, Kansas. After she received her Registered Nurse’s degree she worked as a nurse at a construction site for the United States Government. After the construction was completed she moved to Eureka and worked for the Basham Hospital. After one year with Basham she accepted a position as Director of Nursing at Susan B. Allen Hospital in El Dorado. She then returned to Basham Hospital before becoming the Eureka School Nurse. Jane was later appointed Director of the Bi-county Health Department; she retired from this position in 1980.
On August 21, 1947, Jane was united in marriage to Harold B. Dennis in Eureka. He preceded her in death on December 28, 1973. On December 27, 1979, she was united in marriage to Hugh Dennis in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
Jane was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka, a founding member of P.E.O., and a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, and the American Nursing Organization.
She is survived by her husband, Hugh of Eureka; son, Gordon “Skip” Wassell of Eureka; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and first husband, Harold.
Graveside services and interment will be held at 3:00 P.M., Friday, December 21, 2007, at Greenwood Cemetery with Reverend Diana Hill of the First United Methodist Church officiating. A visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Thursday, December 20, 2007 at the funeral home.
Memorials have been established in her name to the First United Methodist Church of Eureka and the Eureka Public Library. Contributions may be sent in care of the Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
