Margaret Ann Lahar, of Cherryvale, died on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Cherryvale Care Center in Cherryvale, Kansas at the age of 78.

She was born on September 27, 1922, in Greenwood County, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Edna (Shobe) Coop. She was raised in the Climax area and graduated from Climax High School.

James William Lahar, of Cherryvale, died on Sunday, October 30, 2005, at Labette County Medical Center in Parsons, Kansas at the age of 84.

He was born on January 24, 1921, in Fredonia, Kansas, the son of Clarence and Gracie (Philimalee) Lahar. He was raised in the Severy area and attended school in Severy. Due to an accident that took both of his father’s legs, James was forced to quit school after the seventh grade to work on the family farm and support the family.


On August 12, 1940, James and Margaret were united in marriage in Eureka, Kansas. They made their home in the Severy area, where they started raising their family. The family later moved to Wichita where James worked for Love Box Company. After a few years James started working in the oil fields, which caused him to travel the Wichita, Great Bend and Greenwood County areas. In the mid 60’s he and his brother, Bill, formed B&B Drilling Company which he operated until his retirement in the early 80’s. They lived at Eureka Lake until 1999, when they moved to Cherryvale.

James enjoyed fishing and hunting. Margaret was a homemaker.

They are survived by one son, James R. Lahar of Lucas, Texas; two daughters, Julia Menzer of Cherryvale, Kansas and Judy Armbruster of Ellis, Kansas; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister. James was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margaret, two brothers and three sisters.

Memorial services for James and Margaret will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, November 3, 2005, at Greenwood Abbey in Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, with Mr. Jayme Koup officiating. Cremation has been effected.

Memorials have been established in their names with the National Parkinson Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Association. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
