James Lee “J.L.” Henderson, of Eureka, died Monday, December 24, 2007, at Medicalodge in Eureka, at the age of 90.

J.L. was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on May 5, 1917, the son of James Earl and Mildred (Stiffler) Henderson. The family resided in Kansas City, until they moved to Eureka in 1920. James attended Mulberry Elementary School and graduated from Eureka High School with the class of 1935. After graduation, J.L. went into the barber business with his dad. On September 19, 1937, he was united in marriage to Ruby Ellen Logsdon in Sedan.

He lived his entire life in Eureka except for the years he spent in the Army. In 1942, J.L. enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country with honor and dignity. He was sent to the Philippines with a tank destroyer unit. In 1946, he returned home to Eureka to enter the barber business again with his father. He was in the barber business for a total of 51 years, until his retirement in 1986.

J.L. was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka.

He is survived by one son, Larry Henderson and wife, Charlene of Olathe, formerly of Fredonia; one daughter, Linda Mitchell and husband, Stan of Hamilton; one brother, Jack Henderson of Eureka; one sister, Dorothy Purkeypile of Eureka; three grandchildren Chris, and wife, Melissa of Amarillo, Texas; Trent and wife, Jennifer of Olathe; and Aimee and husband, Lyndel of Emporia; three great grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; and two step-great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby; his parents; two brothers, Leonard and Don; and one grandson, Brant.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, December 28, 2007, at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka with Reverend Diana Hill of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in his name with the First United Methodist Church and Hospice Care of Kansas in El Dorado. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
