Jack Dean Shirley, of Eureka, died at the Greenwood County Hospital on Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at the age of 81.

He was born on March 31, 1925, in Clements, Kansas, the son of Emery and Ola Marie (Goad) Shirley. Jack was raised in the Clements area and graduated from Parsons High School. He then attended and graduated from Labette County Community College.

In March 1942, Jack enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served his country with honor and dignity during World War II and Korea. After serving for twenty-seven years in active duty he transferred to the United States Army Reserve. On April 1, 1985, after forty-three years in the military, he retired with the rank of Master Sergeant.

During his lifetime, Jack was married to Tommie Mae Turney and Betty Jo Gibbs. Both marriages ended in divorce. On February 22, 1985, he was united in marriage to Carole Gaffney in Oklahoma. They made their home in Eureka, where Jack worked for the telephone company. He later retired with more than forty years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Carole, of the home, two daughters, Rise` Kay Hargrave of Grass Valley, California and Jacqueline Shirley of Eureka, one grandson, and one brother, James O. Shirley of Overland Park, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, May 26, 2006, at Koup Family Funeral Home with Reverend Rhonda Almond of the Christian and Congregational Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his name to the Christian and Congregational Church. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045.
