Isla Irene Lasater, of Eureka, died at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, on July 8, 2003 at the age of 93.

Isla was born August 22, 1909, at Matfield Green, Kansas the daughter of Hubert and Emma Susan (Leach) Carpenter.

She graduated in 1928 from Rural Reece High School along with her brother Myron – known to friends and family as “Buddy.”

After graduation, Isla was employed with Woolf Brothers Clothing in Wichita. Isla later took employment with J.C. Penney’s as office manager in Eureka. She also ran a credit bureau in Eureka.

Isla met Orville Lasater while she was playing basketball at Reece High School.

Isla married Orville Zenis Lasater on August 19, 1935, in El Dorado, Kansas. After their marriage, they moved to Madison, Kansas where Orville joined his brother in the Chevrolet Agency. Isla was bookkeeper and managed the office until she and Orville purchased the Chevrolet dealership in Eskridge, Kansas. They ran it until they retired.

Orville and Isla enjoyed square dancing with the Happy Swingers of Eskridge as well as camping and being a part of the Harvest Moon and Airstream camping clubs.

Isla was also very much a partner in Orville’s boating expeditions – many times going to the lake early in the day to make sure the boat was warmed up and ready for leisure or competition when Orville would need it.

Isla was also very interested in genealogy and received assistance from Justine Thomas. The two worked together on the Lasater/Gore genealogy as well as the Parson’s side of the family from Havensville, Kansas. The Lasater side of the family is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka.

Isla was preceded in death by her husband, brother, and parents.

She was survived by cousins, Kenneth and Ann Carpenter, and their children John, Charlotte and Patricia of Manhattan, sisters-in-law: Hazel Brown of Gridley, Jean Bowman of Oklahoma City, and their children.

Memorials have been established with the Christian & Congregational Church of Eureka as well as with the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
