Irma Vaughn Gould, passed away on April 17, 2006 at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka. Irma was born in 1910, the older of the two daughters of Guy Alonso and Nora May (Glasco) Vaughn.

Irma grew up in the house her parents built in Piedmont. She and her sister, Mary Vaughn Hoobler, (deceased) attended public school in Piedmont. After graduating, Irma taught a year in a one-room school in Beaumont. At age 18, Irma married Dale Lilly Gould, also from the Piedmont area. The couple was separated during World War II, when Dale entered the service, and received a Medal of Valor for his rescue of personnel from a sinking troop ship off the Normandy coast of France.

At the end of the war, the couple returned to Piedmont where Dale opened and operated a store in Piedmont for many years. There they raised their daughter, Mary Lynn, who also attended the Piedmont schools. Both Irma and Dale were fully involved in the life of the then much larger community of Piedmont. School, church, friends, and family filled Irma’s busy days.

After finally closing the store, in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, the Gould’s lived in Parsons, where Dale worked at a munitions plant until his retirement several years later. Again the couple returned to their home in Piedmont. After another decade, Irma and Dale moved to Eureka where they built their house is 1981. Dale passed away in 1997. Irma has stayed in their family home during the remaining years of her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lynn Gould of Eureka; as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
