Horace F. Holmes
Horace F. Holmes, 92, passed away on September 26, 2014. Entombment in family plot 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, KS, with Reverend Kenneth Baker of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka officiating.
He leaves behind a devoted family and many friends who celebrate his life even as they mourn his death. Born in Greenwood County, KS, January 26, 1922, he graduated from the local schools and later from Emporia State University where he was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, and he was a lifelong Methodist.
Mr. Holmes had lived in Kansas City since 1948 where he was a popular and successful hair stylist in South Kansas City, for more than 40 years. Even after retirement, he unselfishly assisted many of his long-time and supportive clients as they became confined to their homes or care facilities. He and his late companion, Robert C. Hoel, frequently opened their home over a period of nearly 50 years to many friends for memorable Seasonal and Anniversary celebrations
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, having served on the U.S.S. Haines, D.E. 792, and later in the offices of the Commander Service Force, Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, VA and New York City. He remained on the staff when Admiral Sherwood A. Taffinder was promoted to Commandant of the 14th Naval District, Honolulu, where he stayed for the remained of his active duty. On the day of his discharge, he was presented the seldom-given Admiral’s Commendation Award for Excellent Performance of Duty. For this recognition he was enormously proud for the remainder of his life.
Horace was preceded in death by his parents, H. Frank Holmes and Hazel O. Smith Holmes, and a brother M.D. Holmes. Survivors include a brother Phillip D. Holmes, Chanute, KS; two sisters Elsa (Mrs. Raymond L. Denny), Baton Rouge, LA and Mardelle (Mrs. James I. Clogston), Montgomery, AL; and two generations of nieces and nephews.
