Herman Benjamin Grundy, of Eureka, died on Thursday, October 18, 2007, at Medicalodge in Eureka, at the age of 96.
He was born on January 9, 1911, in a stone farm house, about one mile west of Climax, the son of Lowell and Alma (Nitsche) Grundy. He was raised in Climax and graduated from local schools. In 1929, he graduated from high school with a normal training certificate, which qualified him to teach grade school. He taught his first year out of high school at Hillside school. Following that year of teaching, he moved to a country school near Lamont.
On October 3, 1931, Herman was united in marriage to Olive M. Masters in Cottonwood Falls. She was a teacher at LeRoy, and had formerly taught at Climax. The next year they lived near the Lamont schools. The following year, Herman applied for the position of teacher and principal of the Piedmont grade school. After serving in that position for about five years, he continued his education aiming for a Bachelor’s Degree. Olive began teaching at Piedmont while Herman obtained his Bachelor’s, after which, he was hired as a high school teacher in Atwood for one year.
The next year, he taught English at Northwest Junior High School, in Kansas City, Kansas. After moving to Kansas City, he volunteered for service in the United States Army. He was trained as a radar technician at several sites in Florida, before being sent to the Asiatic theater, where he served his country with honor and dignity. At the conclusion of World War II, he resumed his work in Kansas City, also as Chairman of the English Department. In 1972, Herman retired and he and Olive retired to the Eureka area.
In 1971, Herman was named a Master Teacher. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka.
He is survived by one brother, Eugene Grundy of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and two sisters, Phyllis Broddle of Wichita; and Betty Meadows of Iola. He was preceded in death by five brothers.
