Herbert Vincent “Herb” Rockhill, of Eureka, died on Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Golden LivingCenter, in El Dorado, at the age of 91.
He was born on April 14, 1917, in Eureka, the son of Harry and Josie (Bales) Rockhill. He was raised in Eureka, and graduated from local schools. After high school, he spent a year and a half at the Wichita Business College, before moving to Denver, Colorado, to work for Cudahy Packing Company. After a few years he returned to Wichita, where he worked for Drillers Supply, until 1941 when he returned to Eureka, becoming a partner in the livestock auction house.
On June 6, 1941, he was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Smith in Eureka. In 1945, Herb joined the United States Army, serving his country with honor and dignity in Okinawa, Japan. Margaret Ann preceded him in death on February 19, 1983. On December 28, 1983, he was united in marriage to Adalia Wood in Eureka. She preceded him in death on June 6, 1997.
Herb was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2712, the Masons, the Midian Shrine, the Livestock Marketing Association, of which he was a past President, the Eureka Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, and the Greenwood County Cattlemen’s Association. He was elected to the office of Mayor of Eureka, and held that post for 9 years. Herb was also a significant party in developing the Eastbrook area of Eureka.
He is survived by one daughter, Julianne and husband, Joe Day of El Dorado; one grandson, Sean Doerflinger of Houston, Texas; one granddaughter, Missy and husband, Tom Storrer of El Dorado; one step-grandson, Scott and wife, Teresa Day of Ozawkie; one step-granddaughter, Robin Day of Wichita; one great-grandson, Eric Doerflinger; and three great-granddaughters, Markie, Shelbie, and Erin Storrer. He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, one son, Vince, and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, June 13, 2008, at Christ Lutheran Church in Eureka, with Pastor Larry Cross officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, in Eureka. A viewing will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., Thursday, at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Christ Lutheran Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
