Herbert L. James, 81, died peacefully in the comfort of his home Friday, January 18, 2008.
He was born on April 30, 1926 in Wichita, Kansas the son of Jesse and Esther (Carlton) James.
Herbert graduated from Wichita State University and then enlisted in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge he furthered his education at Florida State University earning his masters degree. After graduation he moved to Hanover and began his career with Dartmouth College in 1949; he was a professor in the Speech and Debate Departments. Mr. James won numerous debate championships throughout his Career, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Best Friend and Rescue Home for Animals. Herbert was a great animal lover, especially of the Pekingese breed. He and his partner raised and showed Pekingese for eight years. Mr. James was a supporter of the Upper Valley Humane Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister. He is survived by his partner Kevelyn D. “Keith” Gilley of 28 years of Plainfield; six nieces, Cindy Lewis of Leon, Kansas, Pegg Crigger of Howard, Kansas, Marie Cullpepper of Walnut Shade, Missouri, Fran Sprague of El Dorado, Kansas, Bobbie Richmond of Marion, Kansas and Judy Wiseman of Howard, Kansas.

Viewing will be at 11:00 A.M., on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at Koup Family Funeral Home with graveside service to follow at 12:00 P.M. at Greenwood Cemetery.
