Helena Geneva “Lena” Hurt, of Eureka, died on Sunday, April 16, 2006 at Medicalodge in Eureka, at the age of 96.

She was born on November 19, 1909, in Freedom, Oklahoma, the daughter of Charles and Amelia (Hemrick) Fox. When Lena was eight years old the family moved to Kansas. She attended country grade schools and later Severy High School, graduating with the class of 1928. On February 16, 1929, she was united in marriage to Loren Vearl Hurt in Eureka.

The family made their home in Eureka. Lena began teaching after completing a one year normal training certificate. The family farmed in Severy and Fall River as well as operated the Severy dairy, the Post Office, and a restaurant and gas station. In 1952, they moved to Wichita and Lena began working for Boeing. Loren retired in the early 1970’s, and they moved back to Severy. Loren preceded her in death in 1979.

Lena was a member of the United Methodist Church of Severy, Extension, the Severy Senior Center, and the Grenola Senior Center.

She is survived by three daughters, Margaret and Bob McLean of Eureka; Wilma and Walter Dean of Grenola; and Shirley Lakin of Independence; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, three sisters, and one great-grandchild, Doug.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, April 22, 2006 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka with Reverend Diana Hill of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka officiating. Cremation has been effected. A committal service will be held at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, at South Lawn Cemetery, in Severy.
