Harry Ernest McDaniel of Eureka, died Thursday, April 17, 2008, at Galicia Heart Hospital in Wichita, at the age of 89.
Harry was born on October 31, 1918 to Ernest and Flora (Taylor) McDaniel. He was raised on a farm with four brothers, near Sharon, Kansas, enjoying sports, fishing, and hunting. He graduated from Sharon High School before being drafted into the Army. He served his country proudly in the 633rd Field Artillery Division on the front lines of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, during World War II. After his discharge, he was united in marriage to Imogene Elizabeth Bonham of Corwin, Kansas on September 4, 1945.
Harry and Imogene’s first home was near Zenda, Kansas, with Janet Kay being born in 1949. They moved to Argonia, Kansas in 1953 where their daughter Karen Ann was born. Harry and Imogene worked side by side farming and harvesting wheat. A registered Angus cow calf herd brought them to the Flint Hills purchasing Greenwood County grass land in the 1960’s. They moved to Eureka in 1972.
Harry was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka, and long time member of the VFW.
Harry is survived by his wife, Imogene, of the home; daughters, Janet Guthrie (husband, Keith); and Karen McDaniel both of Eureka; granddaughters Charlene Beth Baker (husband Corey) of Toronto; and Anne Janette Welsh of Eureka; great grandchildren Brooke Ashton, Lydia Danielle, Landon Robert Welsh, and Caylee Alexis Baker; two brothers, Virgil of Enid, Oklahoma; and Bob of Caney, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Paul of Seiling, Oklahoma; and Vernon of Sharon, Kansas; and one sister, Rose Marie.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, April 21, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church of Eureka with Reverend Diana Hill officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to honor him with the Harry E. McDaniel Memorial at the Eureka First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
