Grethel LaVerne Elliott of Augusta, formerly of the Hamilton,Virgil and Quincy area, died on January 10, 2011 at LakePoint Nursing Center in Augusta at the age of 95.
She was born on April 20, 1915, the daughter of David and Bertha (Short) Nicholas. Grethel was raised in the Cottonwood Falls area and attended local rural schools. On March 3, 1933 she was united in marriage to Byron “Barney” Elliott in Cottonwood Falls.
The family moved to Saffordville, Kansas before moving to Virgil in 1941. She worked as a cook for the Quincy and Hamilton High Schools for several years. In January 2003, she moved to the Gran Villas and then later to El Dorado.
Grethel was a member of the Hamilton United Methodist Church and the Hamilton Lioness Club.
She is survived by her son, Don Elliott of Augusta; daughter, Yvonne “Sis” Nordmeyer of Toronto; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents, husband, three sons, three sisters, and one brother.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, January 14, 2011, at the Hamilton United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Demas officiating. Interment will follow at Janesville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Hamilton United Methodist Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
