Gloria M. Barkman
Gloria M. Barkman of Wichita, formerly of Eureka, died on February 1, 2013 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita at the age of 86.
Gloria was born on December 10, 1926 in Eureka, Kansas the daughter of William and Emma (Ueding) Stangle. After graduating from El Dorado High School she went to work for the Civil Service during WWII. She traveled the state as interim manager in various offices including Winfield where she met Raymond Barkman. They were married on November 27, 1948. After Raymond graduated from Bradley University they moved to Concordia then to Eureka in 1954 where they worked for Leben Jewelers. They purchased the business and renamed it Barkman Jewelers relocating it to 122 N. Main. After Raymond’s death in 1979 Gloria continued to run the business until 2003. Gloria loved her community, home, yard, and miniature Schnauzer dogs. Complications from a broken hip moved her to Lakepoint Nursing and Rehabilitation in Wichita in 2007.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eureka.
She is survived by her daughter, Debra Barkman of Wichita; special family Skip, Linda, Joel, Jen and Kenzie Bahl of Valley Center; sister-in-laws, Marie Brooks of Newton, Darlene Roe of Derby and Barbara Watters of Wadsworth, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and several siblings.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, February 8, 2013 at Highland Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M., Thursday at Koup Family Funeral Home in Eureka.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established with the Humane Society of Wichita, Kansas and may be sent in care of the funeral home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045.
