Glen E. Payne
Glen Eastin Payne of Eureka, formerly of Toronto, died on January 17, 2013, at the Greenwood County Hospital, in Eureka, at the age of 95.
Glen was born on December 23, 1917, in Beaumont, Kansas the son of Emery and Olive (Eastin) Payne. He was raised in the Beaumont, Leroy, and Keley area, graduating from Beaumont High School. After his schooling, he worked construction for the WPA and the Corp of Engineers. He also worked for his cousin in Kansas City working construction. Glen then joined the United States Navy serving his country with honor and dignity during World War II. After his discharge, he went back to being an operating Engineer working for several different companies throughout the United States. Glen and the family lived all over the United States moving with Glen’s job before moving back to Wichita in 1952. Glen then went to work for Hahner, Foreman and Harness. Glen and Cernie moved to Toronto in 1969. Glen retired in 1979.
On August 5, 1939, he was united in marriage to Lucerne “Cernie” Harris in Enid, Oklahoma. She preceded in him death on June 23, 2000.
Glen was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 101 and the American Legion in Toronto.
He is survived by his daughters, Sherry Langford of Fenton, Missouri; and Nancy Dennis of China; son, James R. Payne of Toronto; five grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; sisters, Wynona Winterhalter, and Phyllis Crowl both of Sun City West, Arizona; and brother, Earl Payne of Ottawa. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters, and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Koup Family Funeral Home, Eureka, with Pastor Jon Petty of the Cowboy Church of Toronto officiating. Interment will follow at Toronto Cemetery, Toronto, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers memorials have been established in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association and may be left in care of the funeral home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045.
