Gertrude L. Lawrence, long time resident of the Eureka area, died April 4, 2005, at Greenwood County Hospital.
She was born near Poplar, Montana, on May 4, 1916, the daughter of Timothy Henry II “Harry”, and Josephine L. (Stark) Ward. She came to Greenwood County as a small child settling in Chase County. She attended grade school in the county, later getting her GED at East High in Wichita.
She married Paul H. Lawrence, on March 1, 1938 and spent 7 years on the Henry Lawrence farm, south of Toronto, before moving to Greenwood County. He preceded her in death, on December 28, 1989. Gertrude was saved at an early age, and for the last few years of her life, attended the Utopia nondenominational church.
She was a member of the VFW Post #2712 Auxiliary, the Greenwood County Historical Society, having worked there about two years as curator, the Bluestem Genealogical Society, Butler County Community College Life Enrichment Program, the Flintstone Campers, and worked for St. Francis Hospital in Wichita for one year as a CNA.
Survivors include two daughters, Arlene Scronce of Greensburg; Linda Winters of Towanda; four sons, Larry of Eureka; James of Eureka; Ronald of Independence; and Carl of Emporia; one sister, Alice Boren of Eureka; one brother, Kenneth Ward of Deridder, Louisiana; fourteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at Koup Family Funeral Home, Eureka with Pastor Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Greenwood County Historical Society. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
