Gerald Eugene Smith, of Toronto, died on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at the Eureka Nursing Center, in Eureka, at the age of 84.
He was born on October 23, 1923, in Wellington, the son of Carlyle and Elta Mae (Lynn) Smith. He was raised in the Greenwood County area and graduated from Neal High School. On July 15, 1956, Gene was united in marriage to Betty Blevins. They made their home in Toronto. She preceded him in death on July 11, 2002.
After his schooling, he farmed, worked at the family hardware store, and worked in carpentry, in the Neal area. He also later worked for the railroad, on a road construction crew, and 18 years with Cheever Oil Service, until his retirement in the mid-1980’s.
Gene is survived by one son, Gary Smith of Toronto; one daughter, Lisa Gant of Wichita; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Dorine Hamilton of Wichita; Meryl Sanders of Eureka; and Elaine O’Quinn of Jacksonville, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka with Pastor Larry Evans of the Neal Evangelical Free Church officiating. Interment will follow in Toronto Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
