George Earl Torrance Jr., of Eureka died Monday, November 20, 2006, at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, Kansas at the age of 87.

He was born on December 15, 1918 in rural Greenwood County the son of George E. and Edna Pearl (Denchfield) Torrance. He was raised in Greenwood County and attended Eureka High School graduating with the class of 1938. After his schooling he began his career in farming and ranching in Greenwood and Elk County. He also worked for the Greenwood and Elk Counties bridge crew as a foreman. He retired in 1992. After retirement he worked for the Senior Center as a bus driver and for Jackson Brothers as a tank truck hauler.

On October 1, 1939, George was united in marriage to Elwanda Samuels in Eureka, Kansas. They made their home in Greenwood and Elk County area.

George was a leader in 4-H in Elk County in the 50’s and was a member of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church. He was also an honorary boy scout.

He is survived by his wife, Elwanda; two sons, Richard L. Torrance of Americus, Kansas and John D. Torrance of Slidell, Louisiana; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; he was preceded in death by his parents; son Teddy; two brothers and one sister.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, December 2, 2006 at Jefferson Street Baptist Church with Pastor Alan Hunter officiating. Private inurnment will be held at a later date. Cremation has been effected.

In lieu of flowers memorials have been established in his name to the Jefferson Street Baptist Church, Greenwood County Museum and the Eureka Senior Center. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045.
