Fredrick Santford “Fred” Greenwood, of Eureka, died at Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita on Saturday, February 8, 2003, at the age of 76.

He was born in Greenwood County, west of Fall River on May 2, 1926, the son of William Rola and Melissa Helen (Wormington) Greenwood. Fred was raised in the Severy/Fall River area and attended the Economy and Greenwood Rural school. After his schooling he entered the United States Navy and defended his country during World War II. After his discharge he worked at various jobs, then in the early 1950’s he began working with Dr. John W. Smith in his veterinary clinic.

On February 4, 1953, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Lewis in Eureka. They made their home in rural Eureka. In the mid 1970’s Fred began his career in the oil fields with the Maurice L. Brown Co. The family moved to Holcomb Kansas with his job. After his retirement in 1994 Fred and Kathryn moved back to Eureka.

He was a member of Eureka Fidelity Lodge #106 A.F. & A.M., Eureka VFW Post #2712, and attended the Neal Evangelical Free Church.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, of the home, sons, William Greenwood and his wife Suzan of Hamilton and Larry Greenwood of Eureka, daughter, Fredda Blakley and her husband Lee of Eureka, ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, brothers, Bill Greenwood of Eureka and Lonnie Lorance of Olathe, and sister, Wanda Girard of Conway Springs. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at the Koup Family Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Evans of the Neal Evangelical Free Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in his name to the Neal Evangelical Free Church and the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045.
