Franklin Delano Gaines, of Hamilton, died on Sunday, December 25, 2011 at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, at the age of 77.
He was born on April 21, 1934 in Peabody, the son of Robert W. and Freda L. (Boling) Gaines. He was raised in the oil field camps of Butler and Greenwood Counties.
While still very young, he determined that higher education would be his route to business success. After graduating from Eureka High School, Frank continued his education via the financial aid he earned through football and academic scholarships. An Associate’s degree from Butler County Junior College led him on to graduate from Washburn University, and later to getting his law degree at Washburn and passing the Kansas Bar Exam. His first business success was as a young attorney who practiced law in Augusta. Frank served in the Kansas Legislature as a Representative for six years and a State Senator for twenty years. His many long and varied careers included working as an attorney, independent oil operator and drilling contractor, rancher, and banker.
In 1983, Frank was united in marriage to Beverly Hertlein in Spearman, Texas.
Frank is survived by his wife, Beverly of Hamilton; sons, William and wife, Deana Gaines of Eureka; Shelby and wife, Alyson of Seattle, Washington; daughter, Betheny Winkler of Eureka; grandson, Sebastian Summers; brother, Richard and wife, Betty Gaines of Spearman, Texas; and sister, Beverly and husband, Chuck Martin of Eureka.
