Frank Pennebaker of Eureka, died on Saturday, June 13, 2009, at the Greenwood County Hospital, in Eureka, at the age of 91.
He was born on October 11, 1917, in Virgil, the son of Alva Edward and Estella (Loomis) Pennebaker. He was raised in the Virgil area and graduated from Virgil High School with the class of 1935. On March 24, 1940, Frank was united in marriage to Virginia Mae Strahm in Uniontown.
He was drafted into the United States Army in 1945 and served his country with honor and dignity in the 71st Signal Service Battalion, stationed in Tokyo, Japan in General Douglas MacArthur’s General Headquarters. After his discharge, Frank operated a grocery store in Virgil, for 12 ½ years. Virginia preceded him in death on June 2, 2008.
Frank was a Past Master of Fidelity Lodge #106 AF&AM, a Life member of VFW Post #2712, and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Eureka.
He is survived by two sons, Keith Wayne Pennebaker of Westphalia; Dennis Lynn Pennebaker of Andover; two daughters, Karen Wiley of Wichita; and Myrna Chambers of Arvada, Colorado; eight grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, and one sister.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, June 19, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Eureka, with Reverend Diana Hill officiating. Inurnment will follow in Virgil Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to VFW Post #2712 or the Greenwood County Historical Society. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
