Francis Hugh Campbell, a longtime resident of Eureka, Kansas, passed away Saturday, September 5th, 2015 at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka. He was 90 years old.
Francis was born on April 19th, 1925 in Yates Center, Kansas to Reta Jones Campbell and Hugh R. Campbell. He attended Yates Center High School, graduating in 1943. Immediately following graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy serving on a liberty ship until 1946. After his honorable discharge he attended Worsham School of Mortuary Science in Chicago, graduating in 1947.
In May of 1948 he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Milliron during a ceremony in Buffalo, Kansas. They would remain together until his death. They resided in Yates Center while Francis worked with his father and brother at the Campbell Furniture and Funeral Home. In 1949 they moved to Toronto, Kansas where they opened and operated the Campbell Furniture Store and Funeral Home until 1962. In 1962 Francis purchased the funeral home in Eureka, Kansas. He owned and operated the Campbell Funeral Home until his retirement in 1990.
Francis was an active member of the community, belonging to and participating in numerous clubs, social and business organizations. He was an active member of the Christian & Congregational Church, Kansas Funeral Director Association, VFW, Masonic Lodge and Lions Club. He was a member of the Greenwood County Hospital Board, the Eureka Chamber of Commerce and the Greenwood County Historical Society.
He enjoyed golf, fishing and traveling. His greatest enjoyment came from fostering the many relationships he built over his lifetime. He was the kind of man who never met a stranger and rarely forgot a person or their story. Above all, he cherished time with his family. He was a genuine gentleman and greeted everyone with smiles, kindness and respect.
Francis is survived by his wife, Shirley of 67 years; children, Bonnie and husband, Joe Williams of Topeka; Nancy and husband, Jay McKenzie of Eureka; and Jeff and wife, Debbie Campbell of Austin, Texas; grandchildren: Josh and Adam and wife, Adriene Williams, Jacob and Kathleen McKenzie and Anna and husband, Lee Meyer; great-grandson Campbell Williams; one brother, R. Dale Campbell; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his two grandsons Isaac Williams and Ryan (wife, Lindsay) Campbell.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at the Christian & Congregational Church in Eureka. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation hours are 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, at the church.
