Adeline Hobbs, 86, of Toronto, Kansas died Friday May 21, 2010 at the Eureka Nursing Center in Eureka, Kansas.
She was born on May 10, 1924 at Quincy, Ks., the daughter of Arthur and Anna (Crouch) Watts. She was the oldest of 13 children.
On September 18, 1944 she married Victor Hobbs of Toronto in Yates Center, Kansas. After the war they made their home in Toronto.
In 1953 the family moved to Andover, Ks. while Vic was employed with the Beech Aircraft Company in Wichita, Ks. In May of 1960 the family moved back to Toronto, where Adeline went to work for Lee and Frances Newland at the Newland’s Dry Cleaners and Laundromat. When the Newlands went back to California in 1961, Adeline took over the management of the cleaners. In the late 1960’s and 70’s she worked for the Artex Sewing Factory in Yates Center and the Thompson’s Chicken Factory in Iola, Ks., until colon cancer forced her to quit in 1976. After she was able to go back to work, she did cleaning jobs for the phone company, city hall, the First Christian Church and Bird’s Oil Lease in Toronto. She was also a hostess of the Toronto Senior Center and took care of the elderly.
She was member of the First Christian Church and the The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 325 both of Toronto.
She is survived by son, David Hobbs of Toronto; daughters, Vicky Gibson and Jane Peavy both of Toronto; Carlyn (Cecil) McCoy of Neal, Ks., and Bonnie Jean (Kevin) Smith of Bella Vista, Arkansas; brothers; Arthur Ray Watts of Virgil, Ks. and Johnny Watts of Afton, Oklahoma; sisters, Fay Johnson, Dolly Ashlock and Sharon Hellman all of Eureka; Joann Ashlock of Virgil; Alma Lee Schlotterbeck of Toronto, Anna Mae Hare of Coyville and Nellie Johnson of Severy; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one-great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband Vic on March 30, 1998; her son-in-law, Gene Peavy on December 31, 2005; grandson; Scotty Gibson on September 23, 1991; her parents; three brothers, Walter Watts, Bert Watts and Kenny Watts.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Koup Family Funeral Home with Reverend Gerald Zuck officiating. Interment will follow at Toronto, Cemetery.
Memorials have been established in her name to Rivercross Hospice or Friends for Life Cancer Society which may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045 which was in charge of arrangements.
