Ernest Wilson “Buzz” Sawyer, of Eureka, Kansas died on Sunday, June 27, 2004, at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, at the age of 66.
He was born on September 19, 1937, in Lincoln, Nebraska, the son of Russell Duvall and Avis Jo (Morris) Sawyer. He was raised in Lincoln, and graduated from Lincoln Teachers College High School with the class of 1955. After his schooling he joined the United States Navy and served his country with dignity and honor during the Vietnam War.
In 1962, he was united in marriage to Gale Foster in Lincoln. Buzz served in the Navy for 30 years achieving the rank of E-8, and served at various locations throughout the world. In 1980 the family moved to Eureka to make their home. Gale preceded him in death on November 22, 2001.
He was a member of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church, the VFW, and the American Legion.
He is survived by three sons, Kevin Sawyer of Winfield, Kansas, Kelly Sawyer of Eureka, Kansas, and Keith Sawyer of Great Falls, Montana; four daughters, April Meyer of Belgrade, Montana, Robin Wagge of Louisiana, Stacey Jones of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Melody Richardson of Oskaloosa, Iowa; three brothers, Harlan Sawyer of Denver, Colorado, Bob Sawyer of Nixa, Missouri, and Russell Sawyer of Arkansas City, Kansas; Buzz is also survived by 18 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers, one sister, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at the Koup Family Funeral Home in Eureka, with Pastor Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church officiating.
