Eleanor L. Austin, of Eureka, Kansas, died at home on Monday, December 1, 2008, at the age of 73.
She was born on February 16, 1935, in Eureka, Kansas, the daughter of Nelty and Opal (Thornton) Lewis. She graduated from high school in Eureka and went on to study nursing at St. Francis School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas. Eleanor was united in marriage to Eugene "Gene" G. Austin, of Chanute, Kansas in June, 1954 in Eureka. He preceded her in death on October 28, 2008.
Eleanor and Gene began their life together in Manhattan, Kansas and started their family while Gene was in college. After graduation they raised their family in Oklahoma and New Mexico as well as Bucaramanga, Colombia, South America; Tripoli, Libya, North Africa; and Medan, Indonesia while Gene pursued his oil field career.
When Gene retired in March, 1990, Eleanor and Gene came back home to live in Eureka, Kansas. Many of their winters were spent enjoying the warm weather of South Padre Island. Eleanor loved to garden and feed the many birds that visited their home. She was a very generous person and supported many of the charitable organizations within the community.
Eleanor is survived by two sons, Mark Austin and wife Janie of Flower Mound, Texas; Meck Austin and wife Lori of Kansas City, Kansas; three grandchildren, James, Jennifer and Lucas of Dallas, Texas and a brother, George and wife Nancy of Post, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Eugene and one sister, Margaret.
A private funeral service was held. A memorial has been established in Eleanor's name.
