Duane M. “Mike” Vanhaverbeke
Duane M. “Mike” Vanhaverbeke, 82, of Overland Park, KS. passed away peacefully on Friday, July 26, 2013, with his loving family at his side. Mike will be remembered as a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.
Born November 28, 1930 in Eureka, KS. to Frank and Jesse (Byrnes) Vanhaverbeke, Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his newborn son, Kevin Michael, a brother, David Van Haverbeke and his sister, Mary Suzanne Mantei.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Joyce (Spain), his loving daughter Michele Bazille (Jeff) and his two treasured granddaughters, Hope and Rachel Bazille, all of Overland Park, KS.
Mike spent his early years working in the family business, Eureka Greenhouse, and graduated from Eureka High School in 1949, where he and Joyce were high school sweethearts.
Mike played on the freshman football team for Kansas State University, and also played football and basketball for El Dorado Jr. College. He served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force, returning to K-State and graduating in 1959 with an engineering degree.
Before retiring in 1989, Mike worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a civil engineer and served as Chief of the Survey Section of the Kansas City District. Mike was also an adjunct professor at Longview Community College, where he taught surveying.
Mike was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Overland Park, Missouri Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers and the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees.
A funeral mass celebrating the life of Duane M. “Mike” Vanhaverbeke will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 29, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eureka, KS., with Father Ken Van Haverbeke as celebrant. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 514 N. Elm St., Eureka, KS. 67045. Koup Family Funeral Home of Eureka is in charge of service arrangements.
