Dorothy Jill “Dottie” Miller, of Eureka, died on January 9, 2008 at Kansas City Hospice House, in Kansas City, at the age of 76.
She was born on July 21, 1931 in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Kenneth and Martha (Janes) Miller. In 1938, she moved to Eureka with Alice, Gordon, and Jo “Jolean” Shaw.
Dottie was initiated into Eastwood Rebekah Lodge #557 in October of 1950. She served as Noble Grand for the first time in 1976, and several other times over the years. She served as President of Rebekah District #22 in 1993 and again in 1999, and as Lodge Deputy for a number of years. Dottie was a dedicated, active member for over 57 years, and had received her 50 year Veterans Jewel.
Dottie was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church, and enjoyed Bible study and worship with the congregation. Her faith sustained her throughout her life. She enjoyed a variety of classes and studies, as well as her needlepoint and solitaire game. She was very proud of earning her GED. Dottie loved to be around people, and her meals at the Copper Kettle were always a high point of her day.
Dottie was very independent, yet relied heavily on the many, many kindnesses, help, and support from friends, the Rebekahs, the First Methodist Church, Gran Villas, Medicalodge, and so many others in the Eureka community. The family is grateful for all that Dottie's friends did to help her over the years.
She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Miller; mother, Martha; brother, Jack; aunt, Jo (Shaw) Lietzke; uncle, Orville Lietzke; and maternal grandmother, and grandfather, Alice and Gordon Shaw.
Survivors include her cousins, Tina Smith, Bobbi Lietzke, and Skip Lietzke (Jo and Orv’s children), all of the Kansas City area.
Memorial services will be held at 5:00 P.M., Friday, January 18, 2008 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka, with Reverend Diana Hill of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka officiating. A private inurnment will take place at another time.
