Doris was born July 21, 1903, in Eureka, Kansas to Dolen M. and Gladys Phillips Shobe. At the age of three, she moved with her family to the Climax area. She attended rural grade school and graduated from Climax High School in 1923. That same year she married William Dale Cross; they lived in several different communities in Greenwood County. Two children were born to this union.
While living near Neal, Doris and her children became members of the Methodist Church. In 1944, they moved to a farm near Hamilton. That fall, Dale bought the Hamilton Feed and Seed Store. In January 1945, they moved into Hamilton. Doris taught the Methodist Junior Sunday School class for many years and later the Menninger and other adult Bible classes.
Dale died in 1978. Doris moved to Eureka in 1982. She became a member of the First Baptist Church and later Jefferson Street Baptist Church.
She loved her home, family, other relatives, and friends. Her parting words to them was always, “keep in touch.”
She was the last survivor of a family of ten children. Five brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.
She leaves to mourn her passing; a daughter, Willis Freeman of McPherson; a daughter-in-law, Freda Cross of Madison; a granddaughter, Charisse Cross and her three children of Madison; a great-great-grandson of Madison; a great granddaughter, Michelle Palermo and her husband Robert and their two children of Omaha, Nebraska; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death besides her husband was one son, Wilbur; a grandson, Charles Cross; a son-in-law, Phil Freeman; her parents and nine siblings.
