Denzell Elizabeth (Gray) Handley, of Eureka, died on Monday, December 31, 2012 at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka at the age of 97.

She was born on September 6, 1915, in Eureka, the daughter of James Harvey and Leta (Wallace) Gray. She was raised in the Upper Fall River community and attended Highland Grade School. Her freshman year she attended the Belle Plaine High School, returning to Eureka her sophomore year to graduate from Eureka in 1934.

She was united in marriage to Glenn C. Handley on March 10, 1938 at Minneapolis, Kansas. To this union was born one son, Jerry Lee. Denzell was an employee of J.C. Penney’s for ten years: seven years in Eureka and three years in Las Vegas where they made their home for 14 years. Glenn retired with disability from the nuclear test site in 1979, and they returned to Eureka.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka.

She is survived by one son, Jerry and wife, Barbara Handley of Eureka; three grandchildren, Mark Allan and wife, Kim Handley; Brad Allan and wife, Rise Handley; and Kathryn Ann Handley, all of Kansas City; two great-grandchildren, Elise Handley and Jeret Handley of Overland Park; and two sisters, Virginia Glasco of Eureka; and Corriene “Corky” and husband, Dave Barg of Eureka. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn; one sister, Louise Olmstead; and five brothers, Wallace Gray, Wesley Gray, Robert Gray, Glenn Gray, and Franklin Gray.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, January 4, 2013 at Greenwood Cemetery, in Eureka with Reverend Kenneth Baker of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., Friday at the funeral home preceded interment.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Eureka. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
