Dean Edward McMullen, of Eureka, died at the Greenwood County Hospital on July 7, 2003, at the age of 69.

He was born on December 8, 1933, in Emporia, Kansas, the son of George W. and Ethel (Shull) McMullen. Dean was raised in Emporia and attended Emporia schools. After his schooling he worked at a feedlot for a short while before going to work for Coca Cola Bottling. He also painted signs in and around Emporia.

On June 29, 1963, he was united in marriage to Diana Divine in Emporia. The couple made their home in Eureka where Dean worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation and owned and operated Dean’s Sign Shop. He retired from KDOT in 1995, but continued in the sign business until his health failed.

Dean was a member of the Eureka Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Diana, of the home, one son, Terry McMullen of Fall River, three daughters, Lisa McMullen of Eureka, Brenda Ward of Neal, and Beth Ricketts of Meridan, seven grandchildren, and one sister, Naomi Fern Riggs of Emporia. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, July 11, 2003, at the Koup Family Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Boles officiating. Inurnment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made in his name to the Dean McMullen Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
