Daryl Keith Lawrence, 68, of Eureka, Kansas died Saturday, January 29, 2005 at Greenwood County Hospital, in Eureka.
He was born February 6, 1936, on a farm near Fall River, Kansas to Alice Ward and Ira Keith Lawrence. Daryl attended first grade at Shawnee school near Fall River and second grade at Wall Street school near Eureka, and then his family moved to Eureka where he completed grade school and graduated from Eureka High School in 1954.
He held several jobs during high school including delivering milk and newspapers. He later worked for Don Gano Auto Service, Massey Auto, Oblander Auto and for Forrest Ray as an auto mechanic. He also worked for Rock Island Lumber Company in Eureka and Western Auto Store. He began work at the Eureka Post Office in 1965 and retired as a postal clerk on March 3, 1999.
On June 23, 1957, he married Patricia J. Mock at Reece Christian Church, Reece, Kansas. They lived in Eureka for 10 years and then moved to a small farm at the edge of town where he enjoyed raising hogs, corn, soybeans, and hay, and gardening. He especially enjoyed rebuilding small tractors and attending tractor shows. He also worked with wood and built or remodeled the two homes where they lived as well as other buildings. Daryl enjoyed radio controlled model airplanes, woodcarving, and gardening. He was a Boy Scout and then a Scout leader and was a member of the Eureka National Guard Unit for 8 years, joining when he was 17 years old.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia of the home; two sons, Kendall and wife Michelle of Houston, Texas; and Kevin and wife, Debbie of Eureka; five daughters, Karen Godfrey and husband, Darrell of Overland Park; Marita Cohen and husband, Garra of Leavenworth; Michelle Herrmann and husband, Richard of rural Towanda; Kami Elder and husband, Stephen of Iola; and Melissa Lawrence of Ottawa; twenty grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; mother, Alice Boren of Eureka; sisters, Darlene Denner and Sharon Kreger of Eureka; and one step-brother, Roy Boren of Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ira Keith Lawrence, and his brother, Dean Lawrence. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, of Eureka.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at Koup Family Funeral Home, Eureka with Reverend Diana Hill officiating. Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery.
