Dale Leon Smith of Towanda formerly of Virgil died on March 23, 2010, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, at the age of 76.

He was born on January 3, 1934, in Virgil, the son of Walter Dale and Tena Belle (Winn) Smith. He was raised in Virgil and graduated from Virgil High School. After his schooling, he worked at a sawmill in Oregon before joining the United States Army Air Force.

In 1952, in Virgil, Dale was united in marriage to Frances McCoy. They made their home in Towanda.

After his discharge, he worked at Hughes Aircraft as an electrical technician, and then became a computer programmer. He worked there for 18 years. He later worked for Ben Franklin in Wichita, as a computer programmer until his retirement in 1998.

Dale is survived by one son, Charles Smith of Towanda; one daughter, Diana Smith of Topeka; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Velda Hanson of Des Moines, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, March 26, 2010, at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka, with Pastor David Gibbs of the First Baptist Church of Towanda officiating. Viewing will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., Thursday, at the funeral home. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date.
