Dale Purkeypile of Eureka died on Thursday, June 29, 2006, at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, at the age of 85.
He was born on January 30, 1921, near Hamilton, the son of Glad Eric and Myrtle Mae (Langton) Purkeypile. He was raised in the Hamilton area and graduated from Eureka High School. He joined the United States Army and served his country with honor and dignity during World War II. Upon his discharge, he farmed and ranched and worked for the United States Postal Service for thirty years, retiring in 1989. After retirement he drove a bus for the Eureka Senior Center.
On August 17, 1944, Dale was united in marriage to Doris Carolyn Rabon in Camden, South Carolina. They made their home in Eureka, where they raised their family.
Dale was a founding member of the Kansas Gelbvieh Cattle Association where he served as vice president. Dale and Carolyn were pioneers in establishing the Gelbvieh breed in Kansas and throughout the United States. In 1982, they won Grand Champion bull at the National Western Livestock Show in Denver, Colorado. He was also a member of the American Legion of Eureka, and the First United Methodist Church of Eureka.
He is survived by his wife Doris Carolyn, of the home; one son, Dale Purkeypile, Jr. and wife Mary of Champaign, Illinois; one daughter, Rita Harding and husband Michael of Topeka; four grandchildren Nichole Purkeypile, Amanda Manche and husband Eric, Shawn Harding and wife Claire and Brett Harding; two great-grandchildren Darren Eli and William Dale; one brother Burl Purkeypile of Eureka; and three sisters, Helen Buffington of Ottawa; Doris Segebartt of Genesee, Idaho; and Wanda Mitchell of El Dorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harold and Doyle Purkeypile, and three sisters, Gladys Owen, Ruby White, and Thelma Ryan.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Sunday July 2, 2006, at the Koup Family Funeral Home with Reverend Diana Hill of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
