Cora Margaret Briggs died at her residence in Moran, Kansas on June 18, 2005, at the age of 101.
She was born in Stillwell, Oklahoma on May 24, 1904, the daughter of Samuel and Betty (Liver) Chair. She spent her early years in Talquah, Oklahoma, and then attended school at the Haskell Indian School in Lawrence, Kansas.
On January 14, 1921, Cora was united in marriage to Ocie William Briggs in Independence, Kansas. The family made their home in several Oklahoma towns including Ochela, Barnsdale, Nowata, Coody’s Bluff, and Delaware, before moving to Greenwood County in the early 1940’s. In 1958 they moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico, then to Springer, New Mexico, and in the early 1960’s to Eureka. Ocie preceded her in death on July 5, 1971. Cora remained in Eureka until the mid 1980’s, when she moved to Moran.
Cora was a member of the First Baptist Church of Moran, a homemaker, and a full blooded Cherokee Indian.
She is survived by five sons, Charles Briggs of Hoisington, Kansas, Robert Briggs of Aurora, Colorado, Paul Briggs of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Earl Briggs of La Harp, Kansas, and Dean Briggs of Garden City, Kansas, two daughters, Naomi Keller of Borger, Texas, and Lorene Wilson of Moran, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Frank and Ocie Jr., one daughter, Midge McVey, two brothers, and two sisters.
Graveside services and interment will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at Greenwood Cemetery with Pastor Dean Scott of the Bible Baptist Church of St. Mary’s, Kansas officiating.
A memorial has been established in her name to the Parsons Hospice. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
