Colleen Helen Sovern Criswell
Colleen Helen Sovern Criswell, 92 of Eureka, was called home on February 18, 2013.
Colleen, an only child, was born October 21, 1920 in Eureka, KS to Samuel T. & Eva Christina Boom Sovern. She graduated in 1938 from Eureka High School. On October 14, 1939, Colleen married her high school sweetheart, James Webster Criswell, Sr. Jim & Colleen had 63 years together before Jim passed on September 22, 2002. To this union was born, James Webster Criswell, Jr., Jannel J. Criswell Mallernee, & Jill A. Criswell Cook.
During WWII, Colleen was a homemaker. Once Jill started to school, Colleen worked for Eureka lawyer, David Kester. She then worked for Hugh Dennis, Eureka Reality Co. for 38 years.
Colleen joined the United Methodist Church at the age of 7 years old. Colleen was active in Methodist Church Mother’s Guild, Random Grade School PTA President & Choir director of the Methodist Church High School Choir for 7 years. After raising their kids, Colleen & Jim loved to travel. They vacationed in Redstone, Colorado beginning in 1967 & would go as many times as possible throughout the years. Other areas of travel were Jamaica, Padre Island, & on a historic cruise down the Mississippi.
Colleen is survived by her son, Jim and wife, Linda of Eureka; daughter, Jannel and husband, Steve of Wichita; daughter, Jill and husband, Roger of Maple Hill,; 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandkchildren; and 3 great-great-grandkids.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, February 22, 2013 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
