Clara Letha Walter, of Eureka, died Saturday, January 3, 2004, at the age of 97 at Medicalodge of Eureka.
She was born on December 2, 1906, in Severy, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Myrtle (Gilbert) Forbes. She was raised in the Severy/Climax area and graduated from Climax High School with the class of 1921. After her schooling she helped her father raise her younger brother and sister.
On December 20, 1926, she was united in marriage to Lee Walter in Eureka. They made their home in Severy. Clara and Lee built a motel south of the Severy junction in the early 1950’s and operated it until the late 1950’s. Although they later divorced, Clara and Lee remained friends until his death.
Clara moved to California in the late 1950’s and worked in the surgical department and sewed for the nuns at Santa Cruz Hospital. She moved to Eureka in the late 1960’s. For several years Clara had her own wall paper hanging business, and loved to sew and crochet.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka, the Order of the Eastern Star, Queen Bess Chapter #56, of which she had been a member for 79 years, a 4H leader, and a member of the HDU.
She is survived by her four children; Harold Walter and his wife Bobbie of Wichita, Myron Walter and his wife Anne of San Diego, California, Merle Walter of Derby, and Melba Larson of Cottonwood Falls, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, January 8, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church of Eureka, with Reverend Diana Hill officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family has established memorials in her name with Hospice Care of Kansas and the Greenwood County Historical Museum. Contributions may be sent in care of the Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045 which was in charge of service arrangements
