Clara Alice “Billie” (Maninger) Matzen died on February 5, 2008, at Medicalodge in Eureka, at the age of 102.

She was born on the farm home of her parents in Harper County, Kansas, on May 15, 1905; the seventh and youngest child of John L. and Pricilla (Wyenneth) Maninger. She was nicknamed “Billie” from a young age, because she was such a tomboy.

Billie was united in marriage on September 3, 1925, to Frank Paul Henderson of Anthony, Kansas. To this union, two sons were born: Frank Robert and David Melvin. Billie was married a second time to Carl Frederick Matzen on February 13, 1985. No children were born to this union.

She is survived by two sons, Frank of Hamilton, Kansas, and David of Lago Vista, Texas; four grandchildren, Tammy Ellen Davis, Todd Russell Henderson, Frank David Henderson, and Mark Robert Henderson; 5 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. She also leaves a host of friends and relatives.

Billie was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers and sisters, Dude, Jesse, Eunice, Emily, Mattie, and Fren.

The Maninger family was very close to her heart and she wrote about her early life on the farm in a book about the Maninger family published in 2000. To her sons she was a friend and wonderful mother.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, February 9, 2008, at Harper Cemetery, in Harper, Kansas with Father Kelley Lackey of the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church of Emporia officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Medicalodge of Eureka. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
