Chester “Marion” Myers, of Eureka, died on July 30, 2003, at the Greenwood County Hospital at the age of 85.

He was born on January 27, 1918, in Altoona, Kansas, the son of Jerry and Clara (Baughn) Myers. He was raised in the Altoona/Fredonia area and attended Altoona Rural schools. He entered the United States Army during World War II and served his country with honor and distinction, and received a Purple Heart for combat wounded. After his discharge, he moved to Eureka, and drove a truck for Jackson Bros. Oil Company, and drove a dump truck in the evenings and on weekends. In 1957, Marion began working in the oil fields for Ward McGinnis as a driller, and later became a self employed oil producer.

On September 21, 1979, Marion was united in marriage to Karen Hayes in Miami, Oklahoma. They made their home in Eureka where Marion continued work in the oil fields until his retirement in 1986.

He was a member of VFW post #2712.

Marion is survived by his wife, Karen, of the home, one son, Don Myers of Plattsburg, New York; one step-son, Bill Pickering of Marion; three daughters, Marilyn Griffith of Carbondale, Shelia Shue of Eureka, and Debbie Hall of Humboldt; two step-daughters, Barbara Woodard of Wichita, and Denise Francis of Ponca City, Oklahoma; one brother, William Myers of Chanute; four sisters, Verna Smith of Neodesha, Geraldine Mahan of Fredonia, Betty Jean Bayes of Sun City, Arizona, and Patsy Welch of Wichita; eleven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Kenneth, and three brothers.

The family will greet friends and relatives from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., on Friday, August 1, 2003 at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 2, 2003 at Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka with Mr. Don Stice officiating.

A memorial has been established in his name to the Greenwood County Hospital. Contributions may be sent in care of the Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595 Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
