Charles “Red” Vanhoozier of Eureka, died on Friday, March 7, 2014 at Life Care Center in Wichita, at the age of 85.

He was born on January 7, 1929 in Severy, Kansas, the son of Francis and Zenia (Ritter) Vanhoozier. He was raised in the Climax area and attended Eureka schools. When his father passed away, he lived with various other members of his family. After his schooling, Red joined the United States Army where he served his country with honor and dignity in Korea. After his discharge, he worked at a filling station on North Main Street in Eureka. It was during this time that he met Leota June Zuck.

On April 9, 1955, Charles was united in marriage to Leota in Severy, Kansas. They made their home in Eureka and later El Dorado. In 1957, the family moved to Baker, Montana and in 1971, they moved to Duchesne, Utah. In 1974, they moved to Douglas, Wyoming where Red began his dream job, working as a pumper for Home Petroleum Company gauging well production. The family returned to Eureka in 1992 after his retirement.

Red was a member of VFW Post #2712 of Eureka.

He is survived by his son, Dan Vanhoozier of Scottsdale, Arizona; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, David, and son, Mark, and one brother.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Greenwood Cemetery with Pastor Gerald Zuck of the Cherryvale Christian Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Eureka Senior Center Friendship Meals. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
