Charles F. Hoggatt, of Virgil, died on July 30, 2010 at his residence at the age of 77.
He was born on February 21, 1933, the son of Thelma Hoggatt Ashley. He attended school at Quincy until his last two years of high school and graduated from Virgil High School in 1951.
In December 1951, he joined the Painter’s Union in Wichita. In April of 1952 he traveled to Fairbanks, Alaska to work for his brother-in-law and sister in their painting business until September 1952, until he got a call from Uncle Sam that his serviced were needed in the U.S. Army.
He was united in marriage to Colleen Kulander on October 26, 1952 at the First Methodist Chapel in Wichita, Kansas.
He served in the U.S. Army from May 1953 to May 1955. In 1958 he returned to Alaska where he and his wife Colleen resided in Fairbanks for eight years. After returning to Kansas he started his own painting business and continued with that for 44 years.
He was a member of the Virgil United Methodist Church and American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5. He served on the Madison-Virgil School Board for twenty years, and was an active member of the Virgil Lion’s Club and the Virgil City Council.
Charles is survived by his wife Colleen of the home, and children Alan and Shelly Hoggatt of Lawrence, Jerry and Sabra Hoggatt of Emporia, Kimberly and Victor Adoue of Argyle, Texas and Kelly and Thad Russell of Manhattan; seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He loved them all dearly. He was preceded in death by his mother and a sister Eleanor Shaw.
Chuck, as everyone knew him was an avid KU fan and enjoyed attending or watching them on T.V., all the football and basketball games.
Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M., August 4, 2010 at Virgil Cemetery, Virgil, Kansas with Pastor Mark Demas and Chaplain Jim Akers officiating.
