Ceola A. Geist, of Eureka, died at the Greenwood County Hospital on Saturday, July 10, 2004, at the age of 101.
She was born in rural Quincy, Kansas on April 2, 1903, the daughter of Albertus and Pearl (Burnett) King. She was raised in the Quincy area and attended country school. After her schooling, she worked in the Quincy grocery store.
On February 15, 1922, Ceola was united in marriage to Walter C. Geist in Eureka. After their marriage, they farmed in the Quincy area until 1937. The family moved to Eureka, after Walter became Greenwood County Undersheriff. After four years as Undersheriff he spent four years as Sheriff. The couple also owned and operated Geist Grocery Store on North Main Street until they retired in the early 1960’s. Walter preceded her in death on November 25, 1964.
She was a member of the Christian-Congregational Church, VFW auxiliary, and HDU.
Ceola is survived by one daughter, Betty Ruth Rose of Emporia; one grandson, Walter Rose; one great-granddaughter, Annie Rose Stryker; five great-grandsons, Charlie Rose, Travis Stryker, Cameron Brown, Collin Brown, Christian Brown; one sister, Nora Huston of Eureka, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Boyd and Leon; and one granddaughter, Carolyn Rose Brown
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Koup Family Funeral Home, with Reverend Doctor Gilbert Daniel officiating. Interment will follow in Quincy Cemetery.
Memorials have been established in her name to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
