Carl Eugene Knudsen, of Eureka, died on July 30, 2007 at St. Francis – Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita, at the age of 77.

He was born on August 17, 1929, in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Russell and Nina (Finegan) Knudsen. When he was young, the family moved to Climax and Carl graduated from Climax High School. After his schooling, he joined the United States Air Force serving his country with dignity and honor during the Korean War. After the war Carl worked at Boeing until moving back to Climax where he worked a variety of jobs. He worked for the Eureka Volunteer Fire Department and in 1958, became Fire Chief. He held that position until 1967. He then moved to Osawatomie and worked for the fire department there. He moved to Eureka where he worked for the Police Department becoming Chief of Police in 1975. He held that position until 1978. Carl later moved to Colorado working a variety of jobs before returning to Kansas in 2001.

On November 26, 1952, he married Mary Olson in Wichita, Kansas. In 1968, they were divorced.

He is survived by his son, David Knudsen of Buffalo; daughters, Kari Castleberry of Hidden Springs, Idaho; Susan Wood of Severy; and Peggy Marlar of Eureka; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Laverne Knudsen of Eureka; and Bill Knudsen of Eureka. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, August 3, 2007 at Koup Family Funeral Home with Reverend Steve McVey officiating. Inurnment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in his name to the VFW #2712 or Harry Hynes Hospice. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045.
